The State of Michigan is handing out free Narcan opioid overdose kits at participating pharmacies Saturday.

No individual prescription is needed, no payment or insurance is required, and pharmacies will not ask for a name.

Kits are limited to one per person and will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Narcan is a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It can very quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing with heroin or prescription opioid pain medications.

In northeast Michigan, the kits will be available at Walmart, Meijer and Family Fare in Cheboygan. In addition, the Alpena Rite-Aid will be giving the kits out on Friday.

The State of Michigan also provides free addiction advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those who need assistance can call 800-662-4357.
