A 5K run/walk fundraiser that was started to continue the legacy of a New York City firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001, will be held in Alpena Saturday.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is named after former firefighter Stephen Siller, who was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.

All monies raised through the local event will benefit programs through the foundation, including one that builds homes for the nation’s most catastrophically injured service members.

The Alpena run/walk event will be held at the Bayview Park band shell Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Registration and donation information can be found online at the Tunnel to Towers website and on Facebook.

Post run events are also planned at the park.

The Alpena City Council has adopted a proclamation of support for the run/walk. Mayor Matt Waligora encourages residents to participate in the event and “support all of our local public safety officers and service members.”
