Staff for the city of Alpena is in the process of seeking funding for a new bathroom building at Bayview Park.

Not only is the closest facility on Harbor Drive in a state of disrepair, the city believes increased activity at the park justifies a modern bathroom building.

City Planning and Development Director Adam Poll confirmed Monday, the city has held discussions with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) about a grant or some other funding mechanism for new bathrooms. He said no formal application has been submitted to the MEDC as of yet, and that nothing will likely happen until later this fall, at the earliest.

Poll said the True North Radio Network Summer Concert Series, Movies in the Park, the city band and other events at Bayview Park would benefit from a modern bathroom facility. He said that while a location is subject to change, the current proposal would place the building near the kiddie park.

He said renovations to the current bathroom building on Harbor Drive “…don’t seem practical.”

A new bathroom building at Bayview could cost as much as $350,000, which was the amount spent on the bathroom facility at the trailhead off Woodward Avenue.
