It’s now official – a new company has taken over the former Kmart property in Alpena with plans to convert the building into a multi-tenant facility, leasing space to companies engaged in design, engineering, sales and manufacturing activities.

The property has been purchased by Ideas 2 Production (I2P), LLC.

The company says building renovations will commence in the not so distant future.

The Charter Township of Alpena Planning Commission met Monday night and unanimously approved a rezoning request for the company, which was essential for the project to move forward. The property has been rezoned from Community Business (B3) to Light Industrial (L1).

I2P representatives said future manufacturing activities at the site are likely to include machining, welding, and assembly of commercial and industrial equipment and related components. Use of the building is intended to be “similar to the types of activity observed in North Industrial Park.”

I2P also plans to improve the appearance of the site with exterior design modifications consistent with a mixed use of commercial and industrial facilities. That includes an increase in greenspace and plantings to improve the overall appearance of the property, along with additional fencing to enhance security at the rear of the property.
