A triathlon that is defined by its rugged backdrop returns to northeast Michigan this week.

Rockport Rugged, the adventure triathlon, will be held at Rockport State Recreation Area in Alpena on Saturday.

The triathlon is in stark contrast to standard triathlon experiences and challenges athletes with uneven terrain, dirt, rocks, tree limbs, and the waves of Lake Huron.

The triathlon features bicycle and running courses along with an open water swim in Lake Huron. There is also an option for kayak or standup paddleboard in lieu of the swim.

“We strongly encourage folks to put together a relay team and join the fun,” said Casey Stutzman, a co-host of the event. “This event is open to all. One teammate can do the run, one can swim, and one can do the bike. It is a perfect way to gather some friends and spend a fun morning at one of Michigan’s most amazing state parks.”

Stutzman said the event will appeal to both novice and experienced athletes with multiple entry and distance options.

Racing starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. All proceeds from the event will be used for future park improvements at Rockport State Recreation Area.
