UPDATE: New jail & passenger terminal at airport

The jail project is a couple of weeks behind and the airport terminal project is on schedule.

The Alpena County Finance Committee Wednesday, received an update on both construction projects.

Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski says the jail project is about two weeks behind because crews are waiting on some building plans from an out of state company. A representative from the county’s construction management team was expected to fly to that business this week to get a better understanding of the delay and to motive that company to move things along.

Kieliszewski said power and internet cables have been run to the site. Crews are dumping sand into the dirt this week and water service still needs to be hooked up. He still expects the project to come in on time, sometime in fall of 2020.

Meanwhile, the passenger terminal at the airport is on schedule to open before the end of the year. The outside shell is basically complete and the building is nearly ready for windows. The interior is taking form and concrete work for the new parking lot and apron is expected to start in early August.

The budget for the passenger building is approximately $11.6 million. The cost of the new jail is about $11.4 million.
