It appears Plaza Pool will remain open this summer, although that decision has not been finalized.

Alpena County Commissioners are concerned with the amount of money the pool continues to lose each year, and have discussed closing the pool this summer to save money.

A group of commissioners and county treasurer Kim Ludlow met with Friends of Plaza Pool and the pool management company last week, to discuss the future of the facility. Chairman Brad McRoberts was at the meeting and said that while it was productive, no resolution was reached. He believes the pool will likely remain open this summer, but says a long-term plan still needs to be worked out.

Commissioners will likely meet with Friends of the Plaza pool again in July.

The county allocated $15,000 to the pool each of the past two years so it would show a positive balance at the end of the year. Without the extra funding the pool would have lost a little more than $4,700 in 2017 and more than $5,900 in 2018. Commissioners recently allocated $25,000 to the pool for the remainder of the 2019 fiscal year.
