DTE/gas line delays street project alongside City Hall

The reconstruction of a section of Park Place alongside Alpena City Hall has been on hold for approximately a month because of a gas line and the slow response of DTE Energy.

The city’s contractor unearthed the line about mid-May and discovered it was not buried at the proper depth.

City staff placed repeated calls to DTE but the response was slow and the project was placed on hold until the gas line was buried deeper. DTE crews were expected to put the finishing touches on the new line Wednesday, and crews for the city were scheduled to resume the street project Thursday, although rain could further delay the project.

Shannon Smolinski is an engineering assistant for the city. She says the infrastructure is in place and she is optimistic the street will be ready for the curb crew by the end of Friday, with curb being placed on Monday.

The project is being done in two sections but section two should go much faster. Smolinski is still hopeful the entire street can be completed by the end of June.
