Saturday is Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Rogers City.

The proclamation was recently adopted by the municipal council.

Elder abuse is defined as a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship with an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

According to the proclamation, only 1 of 14 incidents of elder abuse in domestic situations is brought to the attention of police; only 1 of 25 cases of financial exploitation of older persons is reported; and the problem is expected to grow.

The Rogers City Council encourages the community to recognize, understand, and take steps to prevent the abuse of elders.
