Second candidate applies for open commissioner seat

A second candidate has applied for the vacant District 7 Alpena County Commissioner seat.

Leanne Bloom submitted her paperwork Monday morning.

Bloom was born and raised in Canada and moved to the United States in 2006 on a student visa. She became a U.S. citizen in 2015. Bloom worked for Lafarge in Canada and enrolled in the concrete technology program at Alpena Community College when she moved to the U.S. She got married and had a child and has been a stay at home mom since that time.

Bloom has, however, been active in the community, volunteering her time at various places or causes, including the Senior Citizen’s Center, Girls on the Run, Zonta Club and currently at the newly formed Alpena County Animal Facility.

Bloom says becoming a county commissioner is the next logical move for her to become even more involved in the community. “I want to give back to the community and I believe this is the right place for me to do that,” Bloom said. “I find it rewarding to volunteer my time and in this case it would be an honor to become a public servant.”

A vacancy on the county board was created after former commissioner Kevin Burr stepped down. Cam Habermehl, a long-time commissioner, applied for the seat last week. District 7 residents have until noon on Friday, June 21 to submit a letter of application for the vacancy.
