Alpena County is searching for a new Emergency Services Coordinator.

Current coordinator and 9-1-1 director Burt Francisco has announced he is stepping down after approximately 18 months on the job.

Francisco was hired in January 2018 after retiring as a Major General from the Michigan Army National Guard. He was born and raised in Alpena but left the area in the 1980’s for the military and returned upon his retirement.

From all accounts, Francisco is well-liked and performing above average in his position with the county. He told True North Radio he has not accepted a job elsewhere and has no plans to return to work anytime soon.

“I’m just going to retire,” Francisco said. “When I left the military I came right into this job. I discovered after a year-and-a-half that it’s time to retire.”

He went on to say he purposely has no plans for retirement except to enjoy life. He and his wife will stay in the area.

Francisco plans to stay on the job through July 19. He has three weeks vacation after that so his official last day is currently August 6.

The county is accepting applications for Emergency Services Coordinator through Friday at 4 p.m. More information is available on the county’s website.
