It took a little longer than expected, but Alpena County and Northern Lights Arena – Community have agreed to a new 3-year lease for management of northern Lights Arena.

NLA Community has been managing the facility since 2013. The new deal includes an option for a one-year renewal.

Lease negotiations had been ongoing for some time and were extended several times. In the end, both sides received some of the things they wanted but had to give up other things, according to commissioners.

Under the terms of the deal, NLA Community must pay the county $1 per year in rent, cover all utilities and insurances, pay the first $6,000 toward all maintenance and repairs annually, put a small portion of all ticket sales into a surcharge account for major repairs, and make an annual payment of approximately $40,000 on a bond that was used for an extensive energy upgrade project at the rink and other county facilities.

The county has reduced that bond payment and will now pick up approximately $10,000 in fire insurance annually.

Northern Lights Arena Community is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers “dedicated and responsible for the operations of Northern Lights Arena.”
