Alpena City Council supports RX marijuana businesses

The City of Alpena is moving forward with needed changes that would allow medical marijuana businesses to set up shop within the city limits.

The municipal council Monday night, voted 4-1 to have staff work on zoning ordinance changes, a stand-alone “opt in” ordinance, and possibly an odor control ordinance and other forms before it officially takes a vote to allow medical marijuana businesses to open.

A public hearing on allowing those types of businesses was also held last night, with one citizen speaking in opposition.

Council’s vote comes on the heels of a decision from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) earlier this month, to allow up to two medical marijuana provisioning centers in the downtown area. Provisioning centers are basically retail outlets where medical marijuana patients and primary caregivers can purchase the drug.

Council’s decision paves the way for other types of medical marijuana businesses to operate as well, including grow operations, processing centers, testing and compliance labs and transporters.

A final vote by council to “opt in” could come as early as early as July or August.
