The Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed another bovine TB positive cattle herd in northern Michigan.

This one was recently found in Emmet County but has ties to a bovine TB positive herd in Presque Isle County.

State officials announced earlier this year that a small beef herd in Presque Isle County had tested positive for the disease. That investigation was expanded to Emmet County because a cow from the Presque Isle herd had been moved to Emmet County before the herd was designated as infected.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed last week, a cow that was moved to Emmet County was in fact bovine TB positive.

The Emmet County herd will now undergo whole herd testing.

State officials said the ability to quickly identify and track movements of animals out of infected herds helps ensure the prevention of disease spread.

The infected herd in Presque Isle County was the first to test positive for the disease since 2000.
