Alpena Public Schools is in the process of updating contracts for lawn mowing and HVAC , mechanical, electrical and maintenance systems.

The board of education’s property committee this week, decided to use two contractors to cut the grass at all nine buildings within the school district. Only one holds the current contract.

But two companies bid on the service and one of them came in with low bids at four buildings, and the other with low bids at five buildings. Combining the lows bids of both contractors will save the district $38 per mowing. The cost of each mowing at all nine properties came in at $757. That’s up $57 per mowing from the current contract. The new deal is for 3 years.

The property committee also decided to stay with the current contract holder, Werth Electric, for HVAC , mechanical, electrical and maintenance systems. District officials said they are overall pleased with the service from Werth Electric, which also submitted the low bid. In fact, the hourly rates of $45 for one service and $50 for another are lower than the current rates.

The full board of education will consider the contracts when it meets Monday.
