A shooting incident on Alpena’s north side ending peacefully Sunday night, after the suspected gunman was taken into custody following a 4.5 hour standoff with police.

The incident started shortly after 4:30 p.m. when employees of Decorative Panels International (DPI) reported incoming gunfire while they were performing maintenance on the roof.

Several employees scrambled off the top of the building while others sought cover until police arrived on scene and escorted them to safety. No one was injured.

The subsequent investigation led to a 58 year-old Alpena man living in the 600 block of Ford Avenue. In a show of force, city, county and state police, along with a special MSP team and the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team, blocked off the entire area but attempts to contact the suspect went unanswered.

Then, at approximately 9 p.m., the suspect suddenly walked out of his house and was immediately surrounded by officers and taken into custody for questioning. He was later taken to jail.

The investigation is ongoing.

It is not known why the man may have fired gunshots at DPI employees.
