Alpena council expected to vote on RX marijuana facilities in May

Unless something changes, it appears the Alpena Municipal Council will vote on whether to allow medical marijuana facilities to set up shop within the city limits next month.

A vote on allowing medical marijuana businesses was put on hold in January after council decided to first ask the city’s planning commission to look at local zoning ordinances to map out where it thought medical marijuana businesses could be located.

That work was completed by the planning commission and reviewed by city council this week. But council wants more time to review the findings.

The planning commission report found that two facilities of each type, including grow, testing, secure transporter and processing, along with provisioning centers, would be adequate to serve the city. The report also found that “…competition tends to be an effective tool in order to provide a community with quality establishments.”

In the end, council agreed that a potential vote on whether to have staff prepare for medical marijuana businesses would be held at its May 20 meeting. If council approves that process it basically means it will allow those businesses to set up shop in the future, once staff has updated ordinances, zoning rules and any other requirements.

Council would then take a second vote at a later date to formally allow medical marijuana businesses to operate.
