Record spring snow in Alpena

For the second time in as many years a spring storm has dumped a record amount of snow on the Alpena area.

However, Thursday’s record of 3.1 inches fails in comparison to the two much larger snowstorms from April of 2018, which left behind 9.4 inches of the white stuff in early April and another 13.4 inches around mid-April.

Yesterday’s record snow broke the previous high for April 11 of 1.6 inches, set in 2007.  The area has now received 92.7 inches of snow for the season, which is a little more than 8 inches above the norm.

During a typical April, Alpena receives 5.8 inches of snow.  Last year’s total of 30.7 inches marked the snowiest April of all time.  The year before that the area received only a trace of snow and the mercury reached 77 degrees three times during the month.

The high temperature in Alpena Thursday was only 34 degrees, which is 16 degrees below the long-term average.
