The City of Alpena has been named a Tree City USA community for the 20th consecutive year for its commitment to community forestry.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

The city received the designation after meeting four standards of the program, including the establishment of a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The city will raise its Tree City USA flag at City Hall on Arbor Day, April 26.

National Arbor Day Foundation officials note that an effective community forestry program will cool and beautify a community, increase property values, help clean the air and water, and conserve energy.
