The director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is expected to approve the parameters of an auction for oil and gas lease rights that encompasses nine counties when the Natural Resources Commission meets Thursday.

The 4,130 acres of state-owned oil and gas lease rights will go up for grabs in May and are located in the counties of Alpena, Arenac, Gladwin, Grand Traverse, Isabella, Lake, Mason, Midland and Wexford.

DNR Director Dan Eichinger is expected to approve the parameters of the sale when the NRC meets in Lansing Thursday.

The auction will be held May 7 at the Lansing Center in Lansing.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the sale starts at 9 a.m.  An auction catalog showing the legal description of the lands proposed to be offered and parcel classifications will be available after Thursday, at www.michigan.gov/minerals.

The DNR has been leasing state-owned oil and gas rights through the public auction process since 1929.

In a separate measure, the sale of seven parcels of state-owned land in Cheboygan County, consisting of about nine acres, is also expected to be approved at Thursday’s meeting.
