As many as 2,000 to 3,000 people will descend on Alpena over the next two weekends, for FIRST Robotics district events at the high school.

The competitions are being held this Friday and Saturday and again next Friday and Saturday, March 29th and 30th.

As many as 40 teams of 10 to 30 school-age children from across Michigan will be competing and will be followed to town by parents, siblings, grandparents and others.  Teams will arrive Thursday each week, with opening ceremonies and matches starting Friday mornings.

Competitions continue all day Saturday, from 8 a.m. until awards are handed out at 5 p.m.  Admission is free.

Most teams and coaches will be staying in the barracks at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, while families fill up local hotels.

FIRST Robotics challenges teams of students to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against other teams of students.
