Many residents across northeast Michigan are welcoming the return of spring Wednesday.

The new season officially arrives in Michigan at 5:58 p.m.

The vernal or spring equinox is sacred to dawn, youth, the morning star and the east. The Saxon goddess, Eostre, from whose name we get the direction East and the holiday Easter, is a dawn goddess.  And just as dawn is the time of new light, the vernal equinox is the time of new life.

While people in the northern hemisphere begin to enjoy warmer temperatures and longer days, those in the southern hemisphere are celebrating the beginning of fall.

Daylight hours will continue to grow until we reach the summer solstice, when the sun is at its’ highest point in the sky.  That occurs on June 21, the first day of summer.
