An Alpena man was arrested Monday evening, for stealing items from a church on N. Ripley Boulevard and for attempting to enter two homes in the area.

The investigation began after city officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of Liberty Street on a report the 40 year-old suspect asked the homeowner if he could enter their house to inspect the medicine cabinet.

The man claimed he was working for an organization that assisted senior citizens with their medications.  He left after being turned away by the property owner.

The suspect then approached a homeowner in the 100 block of N. Ripley and asked for a ride to a local business.  When the owner declined, the suspect allegedly tried to open a door to the house.  He walked away after failing to gain entry.

Police caught up with the suspect approximately an hour later when he was seen lurking around Free Methodist Church on N. Ripley.  The man attempted to flee but was immediately taken into custody.  Officers recovered several stolen items from the church, including electronics and tools.

The subsequent investigation tied the man to all three incidents.  He was taken to jail and is awaiting formal charges.
