Polar Plunges to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan are being held in Alpena and Cheboygan Saturday.

People who participate in a Polar Plunge are helping to raise funds for year-round sports training and athletic competitions for more than 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The Alpena event is being held at the SANDBAR & Grill on Long Lake Road.  Registration starts at noon.  The parade of costumes starts at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a plunge into Long Lake.  An ‘After Splash Bash’ will then be held inside the bar with a 50/50 raffle and a live auction of items valued at over $6,000.

A breakfast buffet will be held from 8 to 11 a.m.  A minimum donation of $5 will also benefit Special Olympics.

The Cheboygan event is being held at Hoppies Tavern. Registration starts at 11 a.m.  The parade of costumes starts at 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by a plunge into Burt Lake at 1 p.m.

Awards will then be handed out and there’s also a post-plunge party.
