A popular Chowder & Chili Cook-off will be returning to downtown Alpena in October.

Registration is now open for the 5th annual competition, which awards cash to the best tasting chowders and chili as selected by a popular vote and a panel of judges.

This year’s cook-off is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, from noon to 4 p.m. It will once again be held in the middle of Second Avenue.

“Last year was the first year we held the event in the street,” said Anne Gentry, Executive Director of the Downtown Development

Authority. “We heard nothing but positive feedback about the change, and we had a record turnout of over 370 tasters for 15 chowders and chilis.”

Gentry also said that prizes have nearly tripled this year, including $1,000 for the Best in Show (amateur) and Best in Show (professional).

Registration is $25 and open to any professional or amateur. For additional information visit Downtown Alpena on Facebook or email anneg@alpena.mi.us.

Tickets for the event are $10 for all tastings. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. All proceeds go toward community events and promotional activities in downtown Alpena.
