The group managing Northern Lights Arena is having a difficult time making ends meet financially.

That’s according to county chairman Cam Habermehl, who voted with the majority of commissioners this week, to pick up the cost of insurance at the arena for the remainder of the year.

Northern Lights Arena – Community is responsible for paying for insurance on the building through a contract the group has with the county. But due to their financial difficulties commissioners have agreed to pick up the remaining approximate $7,000 in insurance fees due for 2018.

The two parties are currently in negotiations over a new management contract. NLA-Community has been managing the rink since 2013 when it signed a three-year contract with the county with an option for two one-year extensions.

Only commissioner Brenda Fournier voted against the proposal to pay the arena insurance for the remainder of the year. Fournier was outspoken about not agreeing with the decision. She believes the county should sell the facility if it continues to drain funding from the county.
