David Andrew Patin, 72, of Alpena passed away Friday, November 21, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

David was born in Sand Lake, Michigan on July 13, 1942. After graduating from high school, he attended Ferris State College in Big Rapids receiving an associate’s degree in chemistry in 1962. He then moved to Alpena, where he was employed by the Huron Portland Cement Company as a chemical technician in the laboratory. After the company was acquired by the LaFarge Corporation, David accepted more responsibility in the quality control department until he left the company in the early 1980’s to pursue full-time ownership of the Court Yard Restaurant and Lounge, which he had acquired in 1981. After years of hard work and continuous improvement, he sold the Court Yard shortly after acquiring the Olde Owl Tavern and Grille in downtown Alpena, which he has owned and operated for 15 years.

David is survived by a sister, LuAnne Murray, and by his brothers, Thomas and Michael. Although David did not have any family locally, he built his own family by serving as a mentor, advisor, friend and father figure to many, many young people employed by him over the last three decades. He will also be missed by the many local vendors, customers and friends with whom he had built relationships over the years.

Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home. A memorial service will be announced at a later time.
