In local sports over the weekend:


The Alpena High School varsity softball team played two games in a rain-shortened tournament in Pinconning on Saturday and lost them both. The Wildcats lost to Saginaw Swan Valley 4 to 3 in the opener and then fell 10 to 2 to host Pinconning. Alpena plays at Traverse City West tomorrow afternoon.

The Alpena JV softball team (26-2) won its second straight weekend tournament by taking top honors in the Flushing Tournament. The Junior Cats shutout North Branch 13 to 0 in the championship game. Alpena defeated Plymouth 15 to 1, Linden 22 to 1 and Flint Powers 6 to 3 on the way to the title.

Alcona went 1-2 in a tournament in Tawas. The Tigers lost to Tawas in their first game 11 to 2, defeated Carrolton 11 to 4 in their second, and fell to Mio 13 to 2 in their third game.

Rogers City won the Glen Lake Tournament on Saturday. The Hurons beat LeRoy Pine River 11 to 0 and then defeated Clare 3 to 1 in the finals.


The Alpena varsity baseball team finished third in the Escanaba Invitational Tournament. Alpena lost its opening game 5 to 3 to Negaunee and beat Houghton 11 to 1 in the consolation game.

Hillman went 1-1 at the Whittemore-Prescott Invitational. The Tigers lost 2 to 1 to Charlevoix and came out on top against Farwell 4 to 3.


The Alcona boys golf team competed on the Forrest Akers East and West courses at Michigan State University on Saturday. The team will defend its district title on Wednesday at the Indian River Country Club.
