Brian Tippman has been named the new Varsity Football Coach after Mel Skillman resigned. Tippman brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team. Coach Tippman played here before walking onto Central Michigan’s Football team and has been an assistant coach for several years upon his return to Alpena. Additionally, Mr. Tippman was the director for the Jr. High Football program when tackling was introduced. Coach Tippman will continue his duties as assistant principal at the high school and is excited to get started.

“I am excited about this opportunity. I was lucky enough to play for football coaches who helped me long after I stopped playing. Hopefully, I can do the same for my players.” Says Tippman.

Athletic Director, Tim Wedge, commented that, “Coach Tippman carries a lot of respect with the players. Whether it is pushing his athletes in academics or in the weight room, the athletes respond. This year alone, we have seen more athletes working out, lifting more and focusing on their academics. As one athlete said, ‘Coach expects we do more.’ Coach Tippman expects more and the students are doing more.”

Tippman said, “Football is an awesome sport. There is not much that is better than going out on a Friday night in the fall and playing a football game under the lights. But, the best part about football is how it can be used to teach students about life. Football promotes academics, dedication and hard work, the building blocks of success for a student.”

AHS football opens Escanaba at home on August 28.
