The Alpena High Wildcat hockey team traveled to Cadillac Thursday night for the first round of the playoffs and defeated the Vikings in double-overtime by a final score of 4-3.
Cadillac opened up the scoring early in the first period and took a one goal lead.
Alpena quickly responded with a goal by Cole Cosbitt to tie the game up.
The Wildcats would strike early in the second period on a goal by Cade MacCarthur to give them the lead.
MacCarthur later blasted a shot from the point that bounced off the boards and ended up on the stick of Zach Nash for an easy goal to give Alpena a two-goal lead.
Cadillac would take advantage of a Wildcat penalty and scored a power play goal with just nine ticks remaining in the second period.
The Vikings would waste no time after the second intermission, and scored a goal just 53 seconds into the period to tie the game.
The remainder of the period was a back and forth battle, as neither team could find the back of the net.
Both teams took the ice after regulation and prepared for overtime.
After eight minutes of overtime, both teams were still locked up at three goals apiece.
Just 49 seconds into double-overtime, Wildcat forward Zach Nash lit the lamp and ended the game.
Alpena will travel to Gaylord Saturday to take on the Sault St. Marie Blue Devils in the second round of postseason play.
