Despite a solid goaltending effort from Brett LeTourneau and a hat-trick from senior forward Jared Kwiatkowski, the Alpena High Wildcat hockey team dropped the first game of the weekend trip to Traverse City Central at Howe Arena on Friday night.

Alpena was first to light the lamp when Kwiatkowski used Wildcat forward Sam Rumbles as a decoy, weaving through Traverse City defenders to find the back of the net.

The Trojans answered late in the first period when the Wildcats killed off a penalty but were unable to regain control and forward Conner McGraw put the Trojans on the board with a wrist shot and tied the game.

The third period was a back and forth battle, as Kwiatkowski scored early in the period to tie the game up at two goals apiece. The Trojans regained the lead quickly on a power play goal.

Traverse City Central added another goal in the middle of the period to extend their lead.

Alpena would strike again late in the third period as Kwiatkowski scored his third goal of the night. The Wildcats pulled their goalie for the final minutes of the game to earn the extra attacker. Alpena had opportunities late but failed to score and ended up falling by a final score of 4-3.

The Wildcats lost the second game of the weekend to Traverse City West by a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. Alpena’s Zach Nash netted both goals against the Titans.
