The Alpena High School varsity football team opened the 2012 season at home in Wildcat Stadium and lost 21 to 0 to Escanaba Friday night.

With temperatures in the upper 80’s at kick-off, the referees controlled the game well and stopped play periodically for cool-down segments with water for hydration.

The Wildcats and Eskymos ended the first half in a scoreless tie after Alpena had two touchdowns called back due to holding penalties.

The second half proved to be very different from the first as the Eskymos came out strong and controlled the ball for over nine minutes on one scoring drive and for nearly six minutes on another.

Alpena’s defense played well but was worn down by the hot weather and an Escanaba offense that amassed 23 first downs and 402 yards of total offense, 346 on the ground.

Eskymo quarterback David Falish led all rushers with 211 yards on 37 carries.

Alpena finished with three first downs and 64 total yards of offense, 51 coming on rushes. Alpena quarterback Brady Marwede completed three passes for 13 yards on 16 attempts.

Alpena’s JV squad won a come-from-behind thriller, 26 to 20, against their counterparts from Escanaba before the varsity game kicked-off. Trailing 20 to 18 with less than three minutes to play, quarterback Tyler Pintar drove the JV’s down the field for the winning score and then the Junior Cats put the exclamation point on it by completing a two-point conversion. Alpena sealed the victory with an interception with under a minute to play.

The Wildcat varsity team travels to Sault Ste. Marie to face the Blue Devils next Friday night.
