January was cold across northern lower Michigan. Colder than normal that is.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures were below average from Alpena to Houghton Lake to Traverse City and Sault Ste. Marie.
The average temperature at the Alpena airport for the month was 14.3, or about 3 degrees below the long term average. The mercury reached a high of 48 degrees on January 1st, and a low of minus-10 was recorded Monday.
Snowfall totals across the region were at or slightly below average in most cases. Alpena bucked that trend, however, with approximately 26 inches of snow, or 4 inches above the norm. For the season, approximately 49 inches has been measured, or one inch below the long-term average. Light snow or more fell on 27 of January’s 31 days.
About 36 inches of snow was measured in both Gaylord and Traverse City in January. Only 17 inches fell in Atlanta, 18 inches in Harrisville and 10 inches in East Tawas.
