Alpena to consider medical marijuana ordinances

Another community recently passed ordinances stemming from Michigan’s medial marijuana law.

Tawas City became the latest municipality to pass ordinances that govern the use of marijuana within the city’s limits, and zoning changes to address where medical dispensaries can be located.

Cities and towns across the state have been enacting similar measures since the medical marijuana law was passed last fall.

City of Alpena Manager Thad Taylor said the Municipal Council will review marijuana-related ordinances in mid-July or early August.  The zoning ordinance will likely state that businesses selling the drug must be a certain distance away from the next dispensary and a specific distance away from schools.

Most cities agree that local ordinances are needed not only to monitor the situation, but also to make sure patients who need marijuana can get it legally and are protected when they buy it.
