An early retirement incentive from Alpena Public Schools and an added bonus from the State of Michigan have boosted the number of employees leaving the district.

A total of 55 employees, including teachers, secretarial staff, custodians, bus drivers and others are retiring at the end of the month.  The unexpected increase in retirees has APS interviewing for 4 secretarial positions, 1 cook and 1 custodian.

The salary range is $13.68 per hour to $15.71 an hour.  Applications must be in by June 25.

Pat Sampier, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources says several teaching positions will probably be available in very specialized areas at the secondary level.  Those openings will be posted after July 1, when the district completes contractual postings.

The district is still working through the numbers and has not released how much it will save as a result of the retirements.
