The association charged with the preservation of the Cheboygan River Front Range Lighthouse has been awarded grant monies to use in an ongoing rehabilitation project.

The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association is set to receive $30,000 from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program to repair the foundation and porch piers of the iconic Lake Huron light.

The money headed to Cheboygan is one of eight grants being distributed statewide from the assistance program and is funded through proceeds from the sale of a specialized “Save our Lights” vehicle license plate.

The current rehabilitation project taking place on the Cheboygan lighthouse was recommended in an engineering study as a means to preserve the light and accompanying structures originally built in 1880.  The engineering study was also funded through a similar grant from the MLAP.
