Alpena working on creating more ‘boater friendly’ harbor

City of Alpena Building Official Don Gilmet is determined to make the downtown marina a more friendly place for boaters.

Gilmet was recently approached by boating enthusiast Dave Funk who keeps his boat at the marina.  Funk is concerned that boats, even those under repair, must be moved out of the parking lot by June 1.  He would like to see that date pushed back to at least June 15.  In addition, he believes the city could do a much better job of communicating to boaters at the beginning of each season and when there are changes to rules or regulations.

Gilmet, who took over the harbor master duties last year, agrees with Funk and is also looking at creating a lounge at the marina, where boaters can go to share stories.  Ultimately he would like to have a welcome center that would remain open after hours and provide late night boaters with valuable weather and other pertinent information.

Gilmet will also be going before the State Waterways Commission on June 18, where he will ask for a 50-percent reduction in docking rates for charter boats.  He will also ask for permission to offer one month and two month rental rates in an effort to attract more boaters to the marina, which has seen a large decrease in boat traffic over the years.
