A former employee of the Payless Shoes store in the Alpena Mall has been sentenced to jail.

Nicole Gries, 34, pled guilty Monday, and was sentenced on a single count of embezzlement by an agent between $1,000 – $20,000.  In addition to receiving 30 days in jail, she was placed on probation for 18 months, ordered to complete 120 hours of community service and pay court costs.

Between April 11, 2009 and January 2, 2010, Gries stole nearly $5,800 in cash from the store through fraudulent transactions.

“I am truly sorry to the courts, my family and my former employer,” she said prior to sentencing.  “I hope everyone will forgive me.”

Gries was also ordered to pay full restitution to Payless Shoes, and she can not be within 500 yards of the store or any employee of the store for the term of her probation.
