Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

Responding to widespread environmental degradation, Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin, called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day, to be held on April 22, 1970.  Over 20 million people participated that first year.

Earth Day is now observed each year on April 22nd, by more than one billion people in 190 countries.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment again held an Earth Day poster contest for elementary students.  The winners will receive an award at a special presentation today, in Lansing.
