City increases penalty for late rental registrations

Submitted by on April 16, 2010 – 6:11 am7 Comments

Fees are going up for landlords who don’t register their rental units on time with the City of Alpena.

Building Official Don Gilmet said the current fee of $50 is not enough motivation for some landlords who repeatedly fail to register rental units on time.  He believes the new penalty of $250 may stimulate offenders.  Rental units must also be inspected prior to occupancy.

Fees will remain the same for failing to re-register existing units in a new owners name and failure to update existing registration forms with new information.

A second reading of the new ordinance and fees will be held on Monday.  The fees go into effect 10 days thereafter.
