A former Alpena resident is on a mission to equip schools with defibrillators and he is looking for his hometown’s help to make it possible.

Al Schiller, a nationally recognized speedskater who is an Alpena native, is continuing a quest that he began two years ago to both raise awareness about the conditions of sudden cardiac arrest in youth and do something to save the lives of those stricken with it.

Schiller’s pursuit is in the running for a $25,000 grant from soft drink maker Pepsi that would begin a journey to rollerblade across America collecting funds to purchase the devices for schools unable to afford them in these tough economic times. He told True North Radio that he realized several years ago how few schools had defibrillators and he felt compelled to do everything he could to make sure that no young lives were lost to sudden cardiac arrest because the life saving equipment was not on hand.

The “Sk8 the States” fundraiser is currently in 27th place and is one of thousands vying for the grant dollars. Pepsi awards grants to the ten most popular fundraising concepts, as voted on by the public.

Growing up in Alpena taught Schiller early on how passionate and supportive the people of northern Michigan could be when the wellbeing of youth is at stake. He is asking everyone to vote early and vote often. Votes can be cast once per day, every day. Grants will be awarded at the end of June after all votes are tallied. To cast your vote go to:
