Kent Sherman

SHERMAN, E. Kent, died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 2, 2010.
Kent was born to Lyle and Helen (Hurst) Sherman of Battle Creek, MI on April 17, 1941.  He spent his childhood years in Battle Creek.  Kent attended Kellogg Community College following high school.  He served in the Army National Guard from 1962-1968.  Kent worked in the grocery business for his entire career, beginning with Meijers, Krogers, and eventually Great North Foods, where he worked from 1976 until he retired in 2001.  On May 15, 1965, Kent married Martha Lee Fish “Marcy” of Battle Creek, MI.  They were married for 44 years.  Kent is survived by his loving wife, Marcy, brother; Doug (Carolyn) of Newaygo, MI, a son; Trent (Anne), two daughters; Tara Sherman and friend, Norbe Hoppe and Jennifer (Chris) Gerling.   Kent spent much of his time caring for his loving granddaughter, Samantha Szymanski, whom he loved dearly.  He is also survived by his two special grandsons; Andrew and Alex.  Kent was an avid hunter and a member of “The White Birch Hunting Camp” for 20 years.  Kent had a great passion for Alpena High School athletics, including hockey, baseball, softball and basketball.  He served as the President of Babe Ruth Baseball , as well as the President of the AHS Line Drive Club for both baseball and softball.  Kent was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars organizing countless fundraisers for sports in the Alpena community.  He was awarded “Booster of the Year” in 1991 and was inducted into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.  Kent was an active member of the Alpena Yacht Club and served as Commodore from 2008-2009.  Most of all Kent enjoyed playing cards, hunting, sharing dinner and traveling with his wife and many friends.
Family and friends will gather at the Alpena Yacht Club for a memorial service on Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 12 noon until the time of the service at 1:00 PM with Judge Jack Kowalski officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Huron Humane Society or the athletic charity of choice.  The Sherman’s have chosen McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena to assist them with the arrangements.  Please visit Kent’s personal web page at www.lifestorynet.com where you may share a memory with his family or sign the on-line guest book.
