Area schools are benefiting from the latest round of grants awarded through the membership of Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op (PIE&G).

Funding for the grant and scholarship program is accumulated by residents who agree to round up their natural gas and electric bills.  The board of directors for the utility then awards the grants and scholarships to assist area community organizations and individuals.

The latest grant awards include $1,300 for Alpena High School post-prom activities.  Lewiston School is receiving $500 for a drug-free event that benefits middle school students across Montmorency County.  West Elementary School in Cheboygan is receiving nearly $1,600 for a heart defibrillator.  Hillman High School will use $2,400 to purchase two classroom computers used for editing and producing student television broadcasts; and Rogers City High is receiving $790 to help pay for a senior class trip to Chicago.

Other grant award recipients:

Montmorency 4-H Fair ($1,300): to assist with fence replacement surrounding the main exhibit area on the north side. The fairgrounds are used primarily to host the Montmorency County 4-H Fair held annually in August.

Lain Veihl of Onaway ($500): to assist with costs associated with the Down Under Sports Tournaments in Australia. Mr. Veihl has been invited to represent his community, state, and country at an international track and field competition.

Northeast Michigan Community Partnership ($810): to assist with the food and board game costs associated with hosting the Alcona County Family Night.

Grand Lake Sportsmen’s Club ($1,750): to assist with material costs to enclose the pavilion at the Fletcher-Gilcrest Park to provide shelter for activities during inclement weather.
