A Friday evening fire that heavily damaged an Onaway building has forced the closure of the Presque Isle / Cheboygan Farm Service Office.

The Farm Service is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture dedicated to assisting local farmers with government-sponsored programs.

According to the Emmet / Charlevoix Farm Service Office, the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.  The USDA rented space in the building from a private owner.

Laura Panko of Atlanta is a federal employee at the Onaway office.  She told True North Radio she worked until 4:30 p.m. Friday and everything was fine as she pulled away from the parking lot.

Panko went on to say she and the other workers at the Onaway location have been temporarily transferred to the Emmet / Charlexoix divisional office in Petoskey.  Agricultural producers needing help can contact that office at 231-347-2133.
