Police in Ogemaw County arrested a parole absconder last week, wanted for defrauding a Cheboygan County deer ranch out of more than $1,300.

Michael Stephen Ryan, 27, is being held on a four-count felony warrant that includes the charges of conducting a criminal enterprise and using a computer to commit a crime.  It’s alleged that in February of 2009 he knowingly offered to sell some fallow [FAL-OH] deer to the Buck Trail Ranch in Cheboygan County.  The ranch wired Ryan a down payment of $1,350 but never received its deer.

Prosecutors say Ryan has defrauded other game ranches throughout Michigan and in other parts of the United States.  He has been on the run from police for some time and at one point was hiding out in British Columbia.  He was on parole from a 2006 conviction for a similar scheme.

Ryan is currently being held in the Cheboygan County jail on a half-million-dollar bond.  His preliminary examination is scheduled for Wednesday.
