The Alpena Midget BB hockey team defeated Marquette 3 to 0 Sunday afternoon in a Midland ice arena packed with fans, boosters, and family members, to win the State Championship.

Head Coach John Fisher’s skaters played five games over the course of the weekend, culminating in a showdown with arch-rival Marquette. Just getting to the Championship Game was no easy task for the Alpena squad and took a unified team effort to bring the trophy home.

The heroics were plentiful and equally spread-out across the lineup, with different players stepping up and taking charge during opportune times on their march to the finals.

Alpena’s fans, hundreds strong, cheered opening game goals by the hard charging Roddy Person.  They were brought to their feet by two semi-final tallies courtesy of Chad Thomas, with his brother Spencer “The Tomcat” at his side. They roared their approval of huge goals by Ryan Caldwell and Kyle Fisher that sent Mt. Pleasant home and moved Alpena into the finals.

Alpena's offensive firepower overwhelmed Marquette

In the end, the final game was as much about defense as it was offense. Austin Gilmet and Ethan Weinkauf stood tall against the Marquette forwards and Alpena goalie Doug Snow turned in a masterful performance, recording a shutout and earning tournament MVP honors. Alpena’s Tyler Phillips scored the game winning goal in the finals and the dynamic duo of Alex Benson and Aaron Senchuck were too much for the Marquette defense to handle.

The Championship Banner and Trophy will be proudly displayed at Northern Lights Arena.
