The 2010 Alpena High School baseball season has officially begun.

For the first time since 1997, baseball tryouts are being held outside on the varsity field.

This is of special significance because the 1997 Wildcat baseball team was arguably one of the best teams in the history of AHS  baseball and will be inducted into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame this spring.

The start of this season brings with it big expectations and the hope that this year’s team can approach the same level of success as the famed 1997 squad.

There are a total of 21 players trying out for this year’s team. Head Coach Scott MacKenzie has told players he plans to make cuts to the roster by the end of the week, with the intent to keep a total of 15 players.

It is great to be on the home diamond in the spring sunshine with such talented athletes.
