The driver of a vehicle taking three students to Rogers City High School may have fallen asleep at the wheel Monday, causing a single-vehicle accident.

Sergeant John Kasuba of the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred at about 7:30 in the morning, near the intersection of US-23 and Petersville Road, south of Rogers City.

John Dehring, 19, of Presque Isle was behind the wheel and told deputies he doesn’t remember what happened.  Police did not find any skid marks from the vehicle and believe Dehring may have been going full speed when he crossed the centerline, left the roadway and plowed into the side of a driveway embankment.

Dehring’s sister, Christina sustained some facial lacerations and was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center, along with her brother, for non-life threatening injuries.

Two other Rogers City students, Robert Farmer of Presque Isle and Shelby Pratt of Posen, were not injured.
