Scammers call Gaylord State Police Post

The Gaylord State Police Post got a surprise Monday, when they received a call that turned out to be a 2010 Census related phone scam.

The recorded message was for diabetics, asking them to take a short survey about insurance coverage.  It warned those with diabetes to take the survey if they did not want their coverage to change.

Investigators called the Census Bureau and were advised the phony call was a scam intended to obtain personal information that could be used for identity theft.

State Police are advising residents to hang up the phone if they receive a call like this and never provide personal information over the telephone unless you know who you are talking to.
