Protect yourself from spring thaw & flooding

As part of National Flood Safety Awareness Week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is offering ways for residents to prepare for spring flooding events.

As winter snows thaw and spring rains arrive in northeast Michigan, residents should take time to plan for the possibility of flooding in their communities.  Over the past 20 years, four of 14 presidentially declared disasters were declared for flooding events in the state of Michigan.

Individuals and families can take steps now to prepare for a disaster by purchasing flood insurance, preparing a family disaster plan and organizing an emergency supply kit.

Officials say residents should listen to the news and follow all notices should a flood warning be issued for your area.
